Back to School, Back to Foreclosure? The Cruel Countdown Facing Veteran Families

As families across the country gear up for a new school year—buying backpacks, notebooks, and new shoes—another countdown is happening quietly in the shadows. One that doesn’t make the news or the PTA newsletters.

On September 1st, all remaining FHA-backed veteran mortgage assistance programs will vanish. And for thousands of veteran families, the first day of school could be followed by the first day of foreclosure proceedings, stress, and spiraling financial insecurity.

It’s a gut punch. It’s a betrayal. And worst of all—it’s preventable.

🎒 From School Supplies to Survival Mode

Back-to-school season is supposed to be full of hope. But for many veterans, it’s become a time of silent crisis. While other families are focused on class schedules and lunch boxes, veteran parents are crunching numbers, skipping meals, and wondering how much longer they can hold on to their homes.

The timing couldn’t be crueler.

Imagine helping your child adjust to a new teacher while secretly wondering if the house will still be yours next month. Imagine watching them climb aboard the school bus with a smile—while the mortgage clock behind you ticks down to zero.

🛑 What’s Disappearing on September 1st?

Veterans who fell behind during the pandemic or due to economic hardship were offered brief relief through temporary programs. Some options mirrored the FHA’s partial claim program. Others gave loan deferments or alternative payment plans. But all of that ends September 1st.

After that, there will be no federal safety net left for those who served this nation but now struggle to keep a roof over their heads.

These programs weren't handouts—they were lifelines. And they are being cut off while nobody is watching.

💔 The Price of Silence

At the KOVH Foundation, we talk to families every week who are barely hanging on. Veteran spouses managing three jobs. Parents afraid to tell their kids why the mail stays unopened. Families facing foreclosure not because they’re irresponsible—but because the system abandoned them after their service.

And now, as the nation celebrates kids going back to school, we’re watching some veteran children walk into classrooms with backpacks and smiles—unaware that the life they know may unravel just days later.

👊 What We’re Doing—and What You Can Do

Our “We’ve Got Your Backs” Care Package Project sends more than supplies—it sends hope and connection to families in crisis. But we need your help. We need your voice.

This September, we urge every American to:

✅ Wear red to raise awareness✅ Sign our national petition for veteran housing justice✅ Contact your lawmakers and demand lasting solutions✅ Share our content on social media with the hashtag #BackToSchoolNotBackToForeclosure✅ Donate to help us send care packages, pay legal filing fees, and fight for legislative protection

They Had Our Backs. Now We Must Have Theirs.

Veterans shouldn’t have to choose between school clothes and mortgage payments. They shouldn’t lose their homes while their children are settling into new classrooms. And they sure as hell shouldn’t be left behind by the country they served.

Back to school shouldn’t mean back to fear.Let’s make sure our veterans and their families are protected—this month and every month after.
