Not Again. Not to Our Veterans - The Mortgage Crisis That Broke America—And Why It’s Happening All Over Again

In 2008, the housing market collapsed—and the American dream crumbled with it.
Millions of families lost their homes. Streets once filled with children’s bikes and porch flags were emptied by foreclosure notices. Wall Street got a bailout. But working-class Americans—especially veterans and their families—were left behind, their struggles buried under headlines and forgotten by history.
Now, nearly two decades later, we are standing on the edge of another housing disaster. But this time, it’s quieter. Crueler. Easier to ignore.
And once again, our veterans are in the crosshairs.
The Crisis That Stole More Than Just Homes
The 2008 mortgage crisis was a national failure. Banks and lenders handed out toxic loans to people who never should have been approved, setting them up to fail. When the economy crashed, over 10 million homes were foreclosed, and families were shattered.
But while the cameras focused on CEOs and bailouts, veteran families quietly became some of the crisis’s most overlooked victims.
They returned from war to find their homes in jeopardy. Many were misled into signing predatory loans despite being eligible for VA benefits. Others were denied help by servicers who didn’t understand or care about their unique needs. As their homes were ripped away, their credit was destroyed, their security vanished, and their hope crumbled.
We saw pride turn to shame. Stability turn to survival. Service rewarded with silence.
Today, It’s Happening Again—And No One Is Talking About It
While the country argues over politics and inflation, a second foreclosure wave is quietly gaining ground, especially for veterans:
Interest rates have skyrocketed, pushing monthly payments out of reach.
COVID-era protections have expired, leaving vulnerable homeowners exposed.
The Veteran Assistance Safeguard Program (VASP)—a vital safety net for veterans facing foreclosure—has ended.
VA loan servicers are overwhelmed, and too often, veterans are ignored, misinformed, or denied help.
Rising costs, stagnant benefits, and systemic failure are pushing more and more families into crisis.
And just like 2008, we’re not seeing the headlines. We’re seeing the heartbreak.
Veterans are living in cars, applying for emergency aid, or forced to surrender their homes at auction to real estate investors—some losing everything they’ve built.
When a Veteran Loses Their Home, We All Lose Something
This isn’t just about housing. This is about what we value as a country.
A home is more than a structure. It’s where a veteran rebuilds their life. It’s where their children feel safe. It’s where healing happens. Losing it means more than moving out—it means reliving trauma, facing shame, and struggling to breathe under the weight of financial ruin.
We’ve heard stories of:
Veterans who survived combat, only to fall into depression after foreclosure.
Military spouses forced to move across states with children in tow, seeking shelter and support.
Entire families uprooted, their futures fractured because no one showed up when they needed help.
These are not isolated cases. This is a national emergency hiding in plain sight.
KOVH Foundation: Fighting for Those Who Fought for Us
We refuse to let history repeat itself. That’s why the Keep Our Vets Housed (KOVH) Foundation exists.
Born from lived experience and forged in the fire of advocacy, we are the first nonprofit solely dedicated to fighting and preventing veteran foreclosure. We are here to say: not again—not on our watch.
We:

You Can Be the Reason a Veteran Stays Housed
This crisis will not fix itself. But you can be part of the solution.
Here’s how you can help:
🔹 Donate — Every dollar helps us protect another family.🔹 Join our National Day of Action on August 15th — Make noise. If we do nothing, we’re complicit in another betrayal. But if we stand up—if we fight back—we can rewrite the story.
This Time, We Don’t Look Away
We see you, veterans. We know what you’re going through. We’ve lived it, too.
And we’re here to say:
You are not alone. You are not forgotten. You are not losing your home without a fight.
