The VA Mortgage Crisis Isn’t Over—It’s Escalating. And Our Veterans Deserve Better.

As of summer 2025, a quiet crisis is unraveling across the country—one that threatens the stability, dignity, and security of the very people who’ve already sacrificed so much: America’s veterans.
After years of patchwork relief and policy delays, the VA mortgage safety net has frayed, and tens of thousands of veterans are now at risk of losing their homes. With the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program officially shut down on May 1, 2025, and a staggering 58,000+ VA-backed loans currently in serious delinquency, the country faces a shameful truth: the very system meant to protect our heroes is failing them.
A Crisis Accelerating in Silence
For many veterans, the COVID-19 pandemic and post-service transition challenges pushed them into financial precarity. The VASP program, launched to buy delinquent VA-backed mortgages and offer more affordable terms, was a lifeline. It kept over 17,000 veterans housed, turning despair into hope.
But instead of extending or expanding that support, the government let it expire.
Now, with delinquencies rising faster among VA loans than any other category, and with housing costs climbing, veterans and their families are increasingly left without options. And while Congress has passed a bill to reinstate a “partial claim” alternative, that bill still awaits the president’s signature—every day delayed brings more risk of foreclosure and homelessness.
The Human Cost Behind the Numbers
What’s not reported in the headlines is what happens after the foreclosure:
Children of veterans displaced from their homes struggle with trauma, academic decline, and emotional instability.
Spouses—many who served behind the scenes as caregivers and advocates—face depression, anxiety, and financial devastation.
Veterans battling PTSD or physical injuries now carry the added weight of losing their homes, which only compounds their vulnerability.
Foreclosure is not just the loss of a house. For veterans, it’s the erosion of peace, security, and dignity hard-earned through service.
Why KOVH Exists—and Why We’re Stepping Up
The KOVH Foundation (Keep Our Vets Housed) was born out of this exact crisis. Founded by a military spouse who personally fought to keep her home after her veteran husband’s service, KOVH has a mission that’s clear:
“No Veteran Left Behind—Not on the Battlefield. Not in Foreclosure.”
We are the nation’s first nonprofit solely dedicated to raising awareness about veteran family foreclosures, advocating for policy change, and offering grassroots solutions to keep veterans housed.
Through direct advocacy, storytelling campaigns, national awareness events like our “Silent Crisis: National Day of Action”, and programs like our Justice Ambassador Network, we’re mobilizing communities, influencing lawmakers, and shining a light on what too many try to ignore.
But we can't do this alone.
