As the summer of 2025 pushes on, thousands of veteran families across America are facing an alarming and avoidable crisis — the loss of their homes. The numbers are clear, the stakes are high, and the clock is ticking.
The Alarming Numbers
14% increase in seriously delinquent mortgages since last year.
9% rise in foreclosure filings compared to the same time last year — and up 11% from just the previous quarter.
58,000 veterans now stand at increased risk of foreclosure after the VA’s Veterans Affairs Servicing Program (VASP) ended on May 1, 2025.
While the newly signed VA Home Loan Program Reform Act reinstates a partial-claim option, its rollout is still in progress — and time is not on our veterans’ side.
The FHA Program Cliff
On September 1, critical FHA-backed mortgage relief programs will expire. For many veterans, these programs were the thin line between stability and foreclosure. Without immediate action, we could see a surge in veteran families displaced, compounding an already growing national housing crisis.
What States Are Doing — and Not Doing
Some states, like California, are expanding the Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) to specifically help veterans pay down arrears and partial claims. But most states have not implemented targeted veteran relief. In fact, 22 states have already exhausted their HAF funds, leaving thousands of veterans with nowhere to turn.
Why This Matters
A veteran’s home is more than a roof over their head — it’s a place of healing, stability, and dignity. Every foreclosure threatens to unravel not just financial security, but family stability, mental health, and the sense of belonging our veterans have fought to protect.
We cannot afford to treat this as just another housing statistic. These are the men and women who served our country. If we can’t fight for them now, when will we?
