Why Rising Healthcare Costs Could Push Thousands of Veteran Families into Crisis
By the KOVH Foundation
🏠 Our Mission, Our Fight
At the KOVH Foundation, our mission is clear: To keep veteran families housed by raising awareness and advocating for policies that protect veterans from foreclosure and housing insecurity.
But as healthcare costs soar and Congress continues to stall, a new, silent crisis is spreading across America.
This time, the enemy isn’t overseas. It’s in the hospital bills, the rising premiums, and the unaffordable prescriptions.
💬 “When veterans can’t afford their medicine, they’re often just a few missed payments away from losing their homes. This isn’t freedom—it’s financial warfare.”
⚕️ The Hidden Crisis: When Health Costs Threaten Housing
Every day, veteran families are forced into impossible choices: Pay the mortgage or pay for treatment? Fill prescriptions or fill the fridge?
These aren’t just tough decisions—they’re life-threatening.
For millions of veterans living on fixed incomes, disability benefits, or a single paycheck, the rising cost of healthcare isn’t just a medical issue. It’s a housing emergency.
Without urgent action to address medical costs and preserve coverage, the consequences are clear:
📈 More veteran families buried in medical debt
🏚️ More missed mortgage payments and foreclosures
⚠️ More veterans and families facing homelessness
💔 More preventable deaths from illness and housing instability
💬 “For too many veterans, one medical emergency becomes the first step toward losing everything they fought to protect.”
📊 The Stark Reality
1.5 million veterans are already at risk of homelessness
467,877 spend more than half their income on housing
32,882 veterans are currently homeless on any single night
Nearly 50% of homeowners facing foreclosure cite medical debt or illness as a major cause
If just 5% of at-risk veteran households face a medical emergency that pushes them over the financial edge, that’s more than 95,000 veteran families losing stability—some losing their homes, others losing their lives.
⚰️ When Illness and Homelessness Collide
This connection isn’t theoretical—it’s deadly.
Veterans who experience homelessness face significantly higher mortality rates. Those burdened by medical debt are more likely to delay or skip care, worsening chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and PTSD. Once housing is lost, health outcomes collapse.
Every home lost is more than an address—it’s a lifeline cut short. It’s another veteran slipping through the cracks of the system they once defended.
🔗 Why Action Is Urgent
This is not just an economic issue—it’s a moral one.
The cost of inaction is measured in foreclosures, hospitalizations, and preventable deaths. Rising healthcare costs are not an abstract policy problem—they are a direct threat to the stability and survival of veteran families.
Health and housing are inseparable. A nation that asks its servicemembers to risk their lives abroad must ensure they don’t lose those lives to medical bills and eviction notices at home.
💬 “Our veterans didn’t fight for this country to come home and fight their own government for health care and housing.”
🗣️ The Call to Conscience
We cannot wait another year while veteran families fall through the cracks. Permanent, reliable safety net programs and funds are urgently needed to protect veterans from the devastating consequences of illness and medical debt.
Because every month we wait, more families face foreclosure, more veterans face homelessness, and more lives are lost.
❤️ Our Stand
At KOVH, we will continue raising awareness and advocating for real, lasting solutions.
No veteran should ever have to choose between health and home.
🇺🇸 “Homes lost mean lives lost. Health and housing are not separate battles—they are one fight. And KOVH will not back down.”
